Case Overview

GLP‑1 receptor agonist medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, and Rybelsus are widely prescribed for diabetes control and weight loss. Emerging evidence and patient reports now suggest that these drugs may be associated with serious eye injuries, including sudden vision loss and retinal complications, in addition to previously reported gastrointestinal risks. Lawsuits allege that manufacturers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly failed to adequately warn patients and prescribers about the potential for severe, and in some cases permanent, eye damage linked to GLP‑1 use.

Health Risks & Injuries

  • Primary eye-related injuries being investigated:
  • Sudden vision loss or significant decrease in visual acuity
  • Retinal disorders (including retinal vein or artery occlusions)
  • Ischemic optic neuropathy or other optic nerve injuries
  • Persistent blurred vision or visual field defects
  • Eye pain or pressure requiring urgent evaluation
  • Other systemic injuries also alleged:
  • Gastroparesis (stomach paralysis) and severe nausea or vomiting
  • Pancreatitis
  • Bowel obstruction or intestinal blockage
  • Gallbladder disease
  • Kidney injury

Who Qualifies

  • Patients who took Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro, or Rybelsus for diabetes or weight loss
  • Individuals who experienced sudden vision loss, retinal events, or serious eye problems after starting a GLP-1 medication
  • Patients diagnosed with retinal vein or artery occlusion, ischemic optic neuropathy, or similar vision-threatening conditions while on these drugs
  • People who required emergency ophthalmologic treatment, procedures, or experienced lasting visual impairment believed to be related to GLP-1 use

Current Litigation Status

A federal multidistrict litigation has been created to coordinate GLP‑1 injury lawsuits, including claims involving both gastrointestinal and eye‑related injuries. Manufacturers Novo Nordisk and Eli Lilly face hundreds of filed cases, and additional lawsuits are being added as more patients and physicians connect these medications with serious vision problems. The court is in the early stages of organizing discovery and selecting bellwether cases, with upcoming trials expected to focus on whether GLP‑1 drugs can cause eye injuries and whether warnings given to patients and prescribers were adequate.
